Training

Take your business or research project delivery and research abilities to the next level in 2022 by improving your use of GIS data analysis and visualisation techniques. Dr Herman Booysen through Y2NEXT is offering learning experiences that will provide knowledge and skills that can be applied in research, GISc projects and workplace environment.

GIS capabilities is an effective tool to:

  • Improve your research findings and publications.
  • Increase the quality of project deliverables.
  • Deliver cost savings and improved ROI by exploring the cost benefits of delivering GIS capabilities in an open-source environment.

Y2NEXT offers GIS training courses, customised for all levels of GIS proficiency, and delivered online. Courses will be registered with relevant professional bodies and participants can earn CBD points. Consulting on projects or research, after successful completion, is included in some of the courses or can be added as an optional extra where not included. The consultations can be used to plan a GIS-related project or find solutions for problems in an existing project.

This year the courses will be online as well:

The following courses are planned for 2022:

Introduction in GISc and QGIS (Level 1) – online

  • Date: 23 – 25 February 2022

One of the aims of the course is to introduce the students to GISc concepts that will help them in conducting their GIS work.

QGIS will be used as GIS software to learn GIS functionality. Basic GIS functions will be taught to analyse data and visualise the results.

The practical application will be to identify Covid-19 hotspots in Bloemfontein.

  • Costing:

Costing for the course will apply a tier mechanism to calculate the cost of attending the training:

Tier 1 includes training and training material. Cost = R500 per day.

Tier 2 includes training, training material and three (3) hours of consultation after the training is completed. Cost = R1 000 per day.

Tier 3 includes training, training material and five (5) hours of consultation after the training is completed. Cost = R1 800 per day.

Use QGIS for clear, impactful reporting (online)

Clear and professional-looking reporting is important to effectively communicate findings of research and/or analysis.

Creating maps of all the wards in your study area can be tedious and time-consuming with the change of inconsistency between the maps. QGIS enables you to organise your map elements in a dashboard format that integrates information for several different sources. QGIS’s Atlas and Report functions enable the user to create maps and reports with greater speed.

Figures 1 and 2 are examples of the two different approaches.

Course objective

Enable the attendee to understand the concepts behind cartography, the use of dashboards and creating reports in QGIS. Furthermore, the attendee will be able to incorporate maps into Word documents and thereby further enhance report writing skills.

Course program

  1. Brief introduction of cartography and QGIS.
  2. Introduction of the data.
  3. Create QGIS project.
  4. Create layout (map).
  5. Create report.

Costing

Costing for the course will apply a tier mechanism to calculate the cost of attending the training:

  • Tier 1 will include training and training material. Cost = R500 per day.
  • Tier 2 will include training, training material and three (1) hours of consultation after the training is completed. Cost = R1 000 per day.
  • Tier 3 will include training, training material and five (2) hours of consultation after the training is completed. Cost = R1 800 per day.

The consultation must be accessed within six months after the completion of the course.

Unlimited further consultations are available and can be booked on our website or contact Dr Booysen directly to discuss consultation needs and how he can support you in using GIS in your organisation.
